The details of the Taroona Daily Fitness Program have grown out of the influence of the Taroona Primary School environment, students and teachers. However, the framework and foundations of the program can easily be adapted to suit other schools.
The program is conducted for the first 20 minutes of each day between 8.55am and 9.15am. There are 10 groups made up of mixed class groupings with students from prep (post kindergarten) to grade 5. Each of the 10 groups is led by a small number of grade 6 students who undergo leadership training for these roles at the beginning of the year. The leaders rotate throughout the year, giving them the opportunity to run each of the daily fitness activities. The grade 5s support the grade 6 leaders and work with the kindergarten children in term 3.
Each daily fitness group focuses on physical fitness and skills development in an enjoyable, non competitive environment with the safety of teacher supervision.
The 10 group activities include:
